It’s not a Diet it’s a Lifestyle.
I am so tired of hearing people say, I am on a 3-4-5 week diet, what happens after that period of time? you then go back to the bad eating habits and the pounds come back then you look for another diet, and so on and so forth. I think the key is to find something that works and make it your lifestyle rather than being on a diet on and off
Personally I hate the word diet, because to me it represents restrictions and bondage, by this I mean diet to me means I can’t eat what I want, when I want it, so I have no freedom. I think if one takes few steps, one can live a
healthy and free life and still maintain a healthy weight.
So if you are a little over weight or you are not happy with where your weight is, don’t worry, just find something that works for you and stick to it and make it a lifestyle not something that you will get out of in 3 or 4 weeks. That is the reason why people keep gaining and losing weight, which is not good for your health by the way. Because they find a diet plan, follow it for a month then drop it.
You can prepare your favorite meal in a healthy way.
What do you like eating? whatever it is, there is a healthy way to make it, do you like fries or chips as I call them? because I like them a lot well, there is a healthy way to make fries and still enjoy them, like instead of frying them, how about you drizzle them with olive oil, add salt and pepper, and pop them in the oven? you will have your fries but the healthy version.
Do you like steak? how about choosing a lean piece of red meat and reduce your potion, potion is the key, how about you increase your serving of salad, and enjoy your steak and fries. Do your research and you will find healthy ways to make you favorite meals.
Ice cream, well, this is one thing I won’t encourage you to keep in the house, because if it’s there, you are going to eat it. So the trick is to not keep ice-cream in the house, but that does not mean you will never eat ice cream again, just put a day aside like once or twice a month when you and you loved ones go out for an ice cream.
Potion control is key
I think everything in small potions should do it, the only thing that I will encourage in terms of potions is the salad, lettuce, spinach, broccoli(OK I know most people don’t like it but it’s really good for you) cauliflower, peas, carrots, tomatoes, peppers of all colors. All these things are very good if incorporated in your meals.
And for breakfast try to eat Oats with milk and you can have an egg and whole grain bread and a glass of fresh juice, actually if you have a good and filing breakfast, you will not be hungry for a long time and also you have given your body the fuel it needs to start the day.
Between Your meals, make sure you eat a fruit of your choice, for me I like apples and bananas, I also have a bag of mixed nuts, I like a mixture of cashew, almonds, and peanuts. Walnuts are good too, the purpose of this is to make sure you have little snack now and then between your meals so you don’t get too hungry and also to keep you metabolism going. The mistake people make is to let themselves get too hungry that when they sit down for a meal, they end up eating too much.
These things I have mentioned here, have worked for me over the years, even if I get invited for a meal, I don’t get worried because I just see where the salad is, I take some of that and then I control the potions of anything else. Try to aim for 100 grams of meat and few potatoes or rice and lots of salad and some fruits. If there is a desert, take a very small potion of that.
You can train your stomach to contain less
The good thing with our stomach, you can actually train your stomach to contain small potion of food. The first few weeks won’t be easy, but once you get used to eating small potions, you will find that you will not be able to eat a lot because if you exceed your capacity, you start feeling sick. So again as I said potions and also when you prepare your meals be careful of using too much fat or too much sugar, everything in moderation.
If you chose a healthy lifestyle that works for you and for your family, then you are free, you don’t have to think about diets.
I also would like to add that you need to find an exercise routine that you like, some people like running, some like walking, some like going to the gym, some like swimming, some like playing a kind of sport whatever it is that you like. Remember, it has to be something you like doing. For me I like doing abit of aerobics and then some hulas hoop I even do some belly dancing for fitness because I like doing something fun yet beneficial to my body. I honestly don’t like that whole torture thing as way of exercising. Remember if you choose something you like, you will be looking forward to doing it.
Water is your friend
I know sometimes water can be boring and so many people myself included find it difficult to drink the daily recommended amount of water, so I have come up with ways to make water drinking interesting, I usually measure my water, then I find ways to drink it over the day, like I would add some lemon wedges, or I have some dissolving vitamin C tablets that I take once a day so I dissolve that in water and its got orange flavor.
But if you really don’t like drinking plain water try mixing fruit juice with water like half-and-half, OK I know the juice won’t be as good but, its better than plain water right?
In the winter I enjoy my cup of tea
In the winter I usually have tea because it’s too cold for drinking cold water, OK I know its not plain water but I try, I do put a little honey so yeah it’s not plain water.
So those are just a few tips to help you chose a healthy lifestyle, and set yourself free of all these diets we are seeing everywhere these days, most of which don’t work anyway. Make a meal plan for you and your family and follow it, and you will see that in time you won’t even be thinking about it because it will become your lifestyle. Let me give you an example of my weekly meal plan,
Monday- grilled chicken with potato wedges made in the oven, with olive oil and oregano, served with mixed lettuce salad.
Tuesday-Spaghetti served with meat balls in tomato sauce and steamed broccoli.
Wednesday-baked fish fillets served with cauliflower au- gratin and whole grain bread.
Thursday-bean curry served with rice and green salad.
Friday-that’s Stake night for our household with salad and fries(chips)
Saturday- you can have a treat by ordering pizza just make sure there is salad, and some fruits after words.
Sunday-for us this is a roast night with some peas, red cabbage, roast potatoes, carrots and some pudding afterwords.
So as you can see by my meal plan, we are eating many nice things and it’s all healthy. So you too can make a meal plan based on the things your family likes, just try to make it as healthy as possible. Obviously I am not a vegetarian, so if you are, please don’t get offended.
